How To Remove Spoiled Milk Smell From Carpet

Spilled milk, when not cleaned out of carpet completely, can spoil and create an overwhelming rotten odor. Milk odors become the most problematic when the spilled milk soaked deeply into the carpet and down into the pad. The best way to get the milk out of the carpet is to flush the area repeatedly with cool water and vacuum up with a shop vacuum at the same time. But to get that spoiled milk smell out of your carpet when all of spill was not completely removed at the time of the spill, you might have to use a combination of treatments to get rid of that terrible odor.

Deodorizing With Hydrogen Peroxide

Use regular 3% hydrogen peroxide from your medicine cabinet. Pour on the spill area. Let it sit until it stops foaming and blot it up with paper towels.

Deodorizing With Vinegar

Vinegar is another option. Mix equal parts of cool water and vinegar and pour on the spill area. Let the vinegar sit for about an hour, then blot dry with paper towels. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries.

Deodorizing With Baking Powder

For smaller spills, you can also deodorize that spoiled milk smell with baking powder. Sprinkle it liberally on the spill area. Let it sit overnight and then vacuum it up in the morning.

Deodorizing With Carpet Deodorizer

Carpet deodorizers designed for use for pet odors can absorb sour milk odors. Sprinkle liberally over the affected area and allow it to set for a day or two. Vacuum away when the smell is gone.

Deodorizing With OdoBan

For the more difficult odor problems, OdoBan will almost always due the trick and is found at almost any large retailer. Follow the application instructions on the container to remove the spoiled milk odor.

Deodorizing With Enzymes

There are pet products available, such as Nature’s Miracle that are designed to remove the proteins that leave odors. Milk odors also come from proteins from the milk left in the carpet. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the container to help eliminate the spoiled milk smell.
