How To Remove Hair Dye From Carpet

Hair dye is one of the tougher stains to remove. First, use a clean white towel to blot-up all the dye that you can, turning the towel to a clean area as you blot. Do NOT rub.

(Always test any cleaning solution used in a less visible spot to see if it will damage your carpet.)

Removing Fresh Hair Dye Stains

Supplies Needed:

  • Water
  • Mild liquid dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Several white cleaning towels
  • Rubbing alcohol

Soap & Vinegar Method

Step 1.  Mix 2 cups of lukewarm water, 1 tablespoon dish liquid soap, and 1 tablespoon white vinegar.

Step 2.  Dip a clean towel into the mixture and dab the stain. Alternate using the wet towel and a dry towel until the stain has been removed.

Step 3.  Rinse with cold water. Use a clean, dry towel to soak up any excess moisture.

Rubbing Alcohol Method

Step 1.  Dip a towel into a small amount of rubbing alcohol and dab the spot, do NOT rub. Repeat with clean area of towel until the stain is gone.

Step 2.  Rinse with cold water. Use a clean, dry towel to soak up any excess moisture.

Soap & Ammonia Method

Step 1.  For a stubborn stain: mix 2 cups of warm water, 1 teaspoon dish liquid soap, and 1 tablespoon ammonia.

Step 2.  Wet a white towel with the solution and dab the stain to dampen it. Allow to sit for 30 minutes. Dab more of the solution on every five minutes with a clean white towel. Repeat until stain is gone. Do NOT use ammonia on a wool carpet as it can damage the fibers.

Step 3.  Rinse with cold water. Use a clean, dry towel to soak up any excess moisture.

Removing Old Hair Dye Stains

Hair dye stains that have dried will be more difficult to remove. Make sure to test these solutions in a less visible spot first.

Needed Supplies:

  • Cheap lacquer hair spray
  • Astringent
  • Baby Shampoo
  • Several white cleaning towels

Method #1.  Spray the hair spray on the stain, wetting it completely. Allow to sit for five minutes. Dab with clean towel, repeat until stain is gone. Rinse with cold water and towel dry.

Method #2.  Squirt some astringent on the stain to wet the area. Allow the astringent to soak in for five minutes. Dab with clean towel, repeat until stain is gone. Rinse with cold water and towel dry.

Method #3.  If the dye was water soluble, try Baby Shampoo. Apply water to the stain a couple of drops of the shampoo onto the stain, gently rubbing in. Dab the area, repeat until stain is gone. Rinse with cold water and towel dry.
