How To Remove Stains From Wool Carpets & Rugs

Wool can take a lot of foot traffic and can help keep soil and dirt at bay. The outer layer of the wool fiber has a waxed surface that keeps soil suspended at the top of the carpet so it can be easily cleaned and vacuumed. Despite a good resistance to stains, wool carpeting can still get them. It's tempting to want to start scrubbing with a brush and a stain remover, but it's best to start with just plain water to see if that will help lift the stain. Blot the stain first with a paper towel to lift any excess residue from the stain – don’t rub, just gently blot. Spray plain water lightly on the stain with a spray bottle, and using a clean white towel, work from the outside of the stain to the center to keep it from spreading outward.

Sometimes, stains will need more than just plain water to remove them from your wool carpeting. If you don’t want to use chemicals, then use a solution of water and dish detergent, or water and white vinegar. Spray it lightly onto the stain and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes. Blot up the stain with a paper towel then rinse with a small amount of plain cool water. Absorb any excess moisture with paper towels.

Many of the more difficult stains can be cleaned with just a simple solution of 1 tsp. of Woolite, 1 tsp. of white vinegar, and 4 cups of cool water. Below is a guide to help you choose the best approach to remove that stubborn stain from your beautiful wool carpets.
