Carpet Cleaning: How To Remove Gum From Carpet

How did that gum get on the carpet? ...shoes or kids most likely. Gum and carpet fibers tend to bond well and seem as though they’re stuck for life. Here are a few ways to stop them from “gumming it up”.

Freezing Method

You Will Need:

  • Ice cubes
  • Ziploc bag
  • Spoon or butter knife

Step 1.  Fill a small plastic bag with ice cubes.

Step 2.  Rub the ice over the gum to freeze it hard.

Step 3.  Use the spoon or butter knife to scrape it away and dispose of the gum before it softens and sticks again.

Step 4.  Repeat until the gum is removed.

Hair Dryer Method

You Will Need:

  • Hair dryer
  • Plastic bag or rubber glove
  • Cleaning towels

Step 1.  The opposite approach of the ice method, this method heats the gum to soften it so it can be scraped away.

Step 2.  Use the hair dryer to heat the gum. Be careful not to overheat the area or it may burn the carpet fibers.

Step 3.  Once the gum is softened, gently pull it out of the carpet fibers. It may help to cover your hand with a plastic bag or rubber glove so you can use your fingers to work the gum out of the carpet.

Step 4.  Remove as much as possible, then move onto the next method to remove the remaining residue.

Method To Remove The Remaining Residue

You Will Need:

  • Choose one of the following:
    • Peanut Butter
    • WD-40
    • Muscle Pain Reliever (ex: BenGay)
  • Cleaning towels
  • Mild Soap
  • Water

Step 1.  Apply the chosen product to the remaining gum and work it in gently with your fingers.

Step 2.  Blot or pull gently on the fibers with the towel to remove the gum. It may also be helpful to scrape at it with your fingernails.

Step 3.  Once the gum is removed, you will need to clean the area to remove the residue from the cleaning product. Mix a small amount of soap or dish detergent with warm water.

Step 4.  Blot the area with a towel that has been moistened with the mixture. Continue blotting until the area is clean.

Step 5.  Rinse by blotting with a clean towel moistened with plain water.

Step 6.  Press on the area with a dry towel to remove any excess water. Allow the area to dry completely.
